How to Celebrate New Year 2020 in Venice

The new year 2020 in Venice is definitely one of the most fun and exciting nights of the year. This is the time when people forget about their problems and experiences and plunge headlong into the festive atmosphere, give gifts and celebrate the New Year with their friends and relatives. The whole world celebrates this holiday, so if you decide to change the situation and go to another country - be sure: you will have a great New Year's Eve there too.

If we talk about travel on the eve of the New Year of 2020, it is worth noting that the Italian beautiful city on the water is especially popular in winter. And this is not surprising: Venice, which is located on a group of 118 small islands, interconnected by numerous bridges, offers tourists a lot of opportunities for an exciting pastime. The celebration of the New Year will seem interesting and cheerful not only to couples and romantics in love, but to all guests of the city.

Where to celebrate?

In Piazza San Marco

The place where the main action takes place in Venice on New Year's Eve is undoubtedly the famous San Marco square. Thousands of people gather here, who count down the last minutes and seconds of the past year, and the meeting of the new is symbolically marked by a clock on Campanile di San Marco, a bell tower more than 98 meters high.

Exactly at midnight, mass kisses take place on the square - a new tradition that has taken root in Venice after the contest for the longest kiss, and the sky above the city is lit up with magnificent festive fireworks that give the Grand Canal a completely fabulous look.

Keep in mind that at midnight Piazza San Marco is very full of people who want to celebrate the New Year, so if you do not want to be in the center of a busy crowd, you should look for another place where you could watch the beautiful city on a magical night. Perhaps such a place would be the building of the center of modern art (Punta della Dogana), where not so many people come. Stunning views are also opened from the legendary Rialto Bridge (Ponte Rialto) - an amazing example of Renaissance art.

In the opera

An equally exciting way to celebrate New Year in Venice is to attend a gala concert at the Teatro La Fenice opera house, which takes place every night from December 29 through January 1. The concert, which takes place on New Year's Eve, is broadcast live on the Rai Uno channel.

Swim in the bay

Fun companies that come to Venice to celebrate the New Year can take part in bathing in cold sea water near the island of Lido, which is an unusual New Year's tradition of local residents.

In the restaurant

You can also celebrate New Years in Venice in a cozy restaurant for a wonderful dinner with a glass of the Italian version of sparkling wine - prosecco. However, it is worth considering that this is by no means the most budget option. But it’s still worth noting that for the money spent on New Year’s dinner, you will get a festive atmosphere, excellent service and delicious dishes. If you still decide to spend New Year's Eve in a Venetian restaurant, take care of booking a table in advance: the number of visitors during this period is huge, and the Italians themselves are not averse to throwing a small corporate party in some cozy place.

Where to stay?

In addition to early booking a table in a restaurant, do not forget to also resolve the issue of a place for an overnight stay. There are a lot of hotels in Venice, but the number of tourists arriving in the city on the water on New Year's Eve is also great. Be sure to read the hotel selection tips.

It should be noted that New Year’s prices in Venice hotels are slightly different about summer prices. So, for example, there is a high probability that you will be able to find a room that will cost you 15-20 percent less than if you booked it in the hot season.
We recommend you to pay attention to the hotels:

  • Hotel Alcyone - 3 star hotel, from the terrace offers wonderful views of the Venetian rooftops and the bell tower of St. Mark.
  • Palace Bonvecchiati is a 4-star hotel with modern rooms, just 250 meters from St. Mark's Square.
