The date of this unique event varies from year to year and directly depends on the Ash Wednesday, one of the holidays of the Catholic Church, the date of which is determined annually.

According to tradition, the carnival in Venice begins 12 days before the Ash Wednesday: the day when believers begin Lent, which will last forty-five days.

This name was given to this day because of the old rite, during which the heads of the confessors were sprinkled with ashes as a sign of remission of sins and the priest said the following words: "Out of the dust came out and you will return to the dust."

In 2019, the Venice Carnival will be held from February 16 to March 5.

The theme of the carnival in 2016 was dedicated to the Milan Expo 2015 exhibition "Feed the Planet. Energy for Life" ("Nutrire il Pianeta. Energia per la Vita") and sounded "The most delicious holiday in the world!" ("La festa piu 'golosa del mondo").

Soon, you may find yourself in the very center of fun, surrounded by merry Venetians and visitors.

The squares of the city will be full of a huge number of costumes and smiles: carnival processions, performances and performances will be held there.

The opening ceremony of the Venice Carnival is scheduled for 18 hours February 16, 2019 and will be held in the Cannareggio area, where everyone can also enjoy Venetian cuisine.

And already February 17 at 11:00 residents and guests of the city will be able to enjoy stunning views: a real boat procession will take place along the huge Venetian canal.

February 23 at 14:30 a theater will open on Piazza di San Marco - the main stage of the entire carnival, where more than one performance will take place. In addition to the established program, Venetians and tourists will be able to participate in numerous creative evenings and competitions.

On the same day from 16:00 in the Mestre district there will be many street shows.

February 24 at 15:30 in St. Mark's Square will choose the best mask.

The closing of the festival in 2019 is scheduled for March 5 at 21:00.
